Two Forces at Work Against Disposable Income

The economic impact of increased US savings. US consumers are spending less and saving more. The economic impact of that combination will depend upon how fast incomes grow.

Two forces that until recently turbo-charged US consumer spending—growing household debt and a falling savings rate—have gone into reverse. In late 2008, as households started reducing their indebtedness and saving more, consumption tumbled.

Great article from the McKinsey Quarterly. Read it now.

In the food service business I can tell you that every restaurant is dependent on the consumer having disposable income to eat out at their establishment. This article brings to light the events that continue to unfold that may cause issues with the hospitality industry and sustaining their revenue, let alone increasing it.

Can We Increase Workplace Productivity?

Reading an article this morning at the Wall Street Journal Online about workplace productivity and motivating your staff. They listed five must-read books on ways to increase productivity. Here were the top five:

"The Human Side of Enterprise" by Douglas McGregor
"Who Says Elephants Can't Dance?" by Louis V. Gerstner Jr.
"The Knowing-Doing Gap: How Smart Companies Turn Knowledge into Action" by Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert I. Sutton
"Leaders: Strategies for Taking Charge" by Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus
"Diamond Dollars: The Economics of Winning in Baseball" by Vincent Gennaro

I haven't read any of these personally, but, most likely in these current times may just get some of these. If you have ever read any of these books I would appreciate hearing from you and your comments.

Each year, more than 12 million children in America (one in six) worry about when their next meal will come. This year, Food Network star Aaron McCargo, Jr. will serve as the national spokesperson for the second annual Share Our Strength's Great American Dine Out.

From September 20 – 26, 2009, this week-long national event will join thousands of restaurants—from coffee shops to fine-dining establishments—in cities across the country to raise funds to help end childhood hunger in America. With a broad range of restaurant and catering experience, McCargo feels passionate about helping Share Our Strength as millions of consumers visiting participating restaurants will help make sure no kid in America grows up hungry.

The first Great American Dine Out in 2008 raised more than $500,000. Four thousand casual- and fine-dining restaurants participated, from independent and family owned establishments to large chains and restaurant groups. Donations from the week's restaurant sales, direct donations from customers and restaurant suppliers, and money raised through restaurant promotions all helped to make Great American Dine Out a success.
